Words & Music at the Skep

Yesterday’s Words & Music festival at the Skep today was amazing and I feel honoured to have been a part of it. Such a wonderful variety of talent and it was a real pleasure to hear poetry and music combined. The Keepers of Hearts got the best review I could wish for when Betty aged three asked for “another story please Sarah” after listening spellbound for fifteen minutes.

The Keepers of Hearts - If you like faerie stories, you’ll love this book

Set in Hastings Old Town in the 1850s, The Keepers of Hearts is the story of young Jack and his magical journey to find the sea faeries of Rock-a-Nore and mend his mother’s broken heart.

Annie Larson is heart-broken when her fisherman husband drowns at sea. She is so filled with despair that she longs to join him in the next life, leaving her son, young Jack, feeling abandoned by both his parents.

Jack decides to find a way to mend his mother’s broken heart and his journey takes him on an adventure through the old town and East Hill, where he meets the fishermen’s wives, a wise owl and a wise woman who help him find his way to the sea faeries of Rock-a-Nore. The sea faeries mend broken hearts by the light of the moon, but they find the task of healing Annie’s heart more difficult than usual and need to turn to the mermaids for help.

Told in rhyme and interspersed with songs, The Keepers of Hearts is a magical story, beautifully illustrated by Claire Fletcher, with a happy ending that will warm your heart. The book launch is being held at The Fishermen’s Museum on Saturday 18th May, with readings taking place at 2.30pm and 4pm. Readings last around 15 minutes and are suitable for grownups of all ages and children aged six and over. The book will be sold at the special price of £10 (usual price £12) and 10% of all sales taken at the launch will go to The Fishermen’s Museum.

The illustrations from the book are on exhibition and available to buy in The Snug at The Crown from Thursday 16th May to Saturday 18th May.
